Overview

Bucky Driving is a manual gearbox for FiveM. Players work a clutch and move a 3D gear stick through a real H-pattern gate with the mouse, and the car responds like one: it bogs and stalls in too tall a gear, rolls back on hills in neutral, and stays the way you left it when you get out.

Feature What it does
Gear gate An H-pattern gate on the right of the screen, built from each car's own gear count
Clutch and stick Hold Left Shift for the clutch; the mouse or right stick moves the knob while the camera stays still
Refused shifts Over-revving or reverse while moving knocks the knob back and lights the slot red
Stalling Releasing the clutch with too little throttle, or stopping in gear, stalls the engine. J restarts it.
Rollback In neutral or with the clutch in, the car rolls downhill unless you brake
Parked cars Get out in gear with the engine running and it drives off at idle; leave it in neutral and it rolls
Pedals Clutch, brake and accelerator on screen, tipping as they're pressed
Three styles Carbon, Blossom and Classic, each in 3D or 2D
Sounds Gear clicks, a grind on a refused shift and pedal presses, made in the page (no audio files)

Cars and motorbikes only. EVs, boats, aircraft, bicycles and trains stay automatic.

Requirements

None. Bucky Driving has no framework, no database and no server script, so it runs on QBCore servers and on servers with no framework at all.

Resource Required Notes
bucky-hud Optional Shows the selected gear and the gearbox's RPM on the speedometer, and gearbox notifications in the HUD's style

Works on FiveM and FiveM Enhanced.

Installation

  1. Put the bucky-driving folder in your resources.
  2. Add it to server.cfg:
cfg
ensure bucky-driving
  1. Restart the server, or run refresh then ensure bucky-driving.

That's it. New players start with the manual gearbox on (Config.DefaultOn).

Updating

Replace every file except your config.lua if you have changed it. Settings added in 1.1.0 (Config.Parked) have built-in defaults, so an older config.lua keeps working. Copy the Config.Parked block from the new file into yours to tune them.

How to drive

  1. Press the clutch. Hold Left Shift.
  2. Move the stick. While the clutch is held, move the mouse (or the right stick) to push the knob through the gate. The camera stays still while you shift.
  3. Release and accelerate. Let go of Left Shift and give it throttle. The clutch comes up over 0.9 s through a bite point, so the car picks up smoothly.
Situation What happens
Too little throttle as the clutch comes up The engine judders, the revs sag, and after 0.6 s it stalls
Stopping in gear without the clutch The engine stalls
Downshifting past the redline The shift is refused and the knob is knocked back
Reverse while still rolling forward The shift is refused
Neutral or clutch in on a slope The car rolls back unless you brake
Drifts, burnouts, jumps and crashes The game's own physics take over, so the engine never stalls mid-slide

J turns the engine off and on. Starting needs neutral or the clutch pressed. J only starts an engine that Bucky Driving turned off, so your vehicle keys script still decides who can start a car.

Leaving the car

The car keeps its gear, engine and handbrake when you get out, like a real car.

How you leave it What it does
Engine running, in gear Drives off on its own at idle until it stalls or hits something
In neutral Rolls down hills
In gear with the engine off (J) Held in place, even on a hill
Holding Space as you get out Handbrake on
Jumping out while moving Keeps going in its gear, slows with engine braking, stalls if the gear is too tall

An empty car also stalls when it creeps into a wall, gets hit, or is shoved backwards against its gear. The next driver finds the same gear. Motorbikes are left to the game (a riderless bike falls over).

Styles and settings

Players open the settings panel with /gearhud. Every change shows live; Save keeps it, Cancel or Esc puts it back. Each player's choices are saved on their own PC.

Setting Options
Manual gearbox On / off
View 3D (real-time models) or 2D (flat). Without WebGL, 2D is used.
Style Carbon (machined aluminium gate, carbon fibre, polished ball), Blossom (quilted blush leather, pearl boot, crystal knob, rose gold), Classic (walnut, accordion boot, enamel shift plate)
3D camera Tilt 20–80° and turn −35° to 35°, one angle for both or separate for the stick and pedals
Layout Drag the gear stick and pedals anywhere, scroll over one to resize it
Pedals Show / hide
Stick speed Scales mouse speed
Sounds On / off
Tuning readout Live gearbox values

Commands and keys

Command or key What it does
Left Shift (hold) Clutch; while held, the mouse moves the gear stick
J Engine off / on
Space while getting out Leave the handbrake on
/gearhud Open the settings panel (Config.HudCommand)
/manual Turn the manual gearbox on or off (Config.ToggleCommand)

Keys are defaults only. Players can rebind them under Settings → Key Bindings → FiveM.

Configuration

Everything is in config.lua, with comments. It stays editable in the escrowed release.

Defaults players can change

lua
Config.Keys = {
    clutch = 'LSHIFT', -- hold to press the clutch; the mouse moves the stick while held
    start  = 'J',       -- engine on / off
}

Config.Display = {
    gate   = { x = 89.5, y = 66.0, s = 0.85 },  -- % of the screen; s = size at 1080p
    pedals = { x = 89.5, y = 91.5, s = 0.85 },
    style = 'carbon', -- 'carbon', 'blossom', 'classic'
    view   = '3d',       -- '3d' or '2d'
    tilt   = 47,         -- 20-80 degrees
    turn   = 0,          -- -35..35 degrees
}

Config.DefaultOn = true -- manual gearbox on for new players

Main settings

Setting Default What it does
Config.HudCommand 'gearhud' Opens the settings panel
Config.ToggleCommand 'manual' Quick manual on/off
Config.Sounds On, volume 0.5 enabled, volume, shift, pedals
Config.Pedals.enabled true Pedal display
Config.ExcludedClasses Cycles, boats, helis, planes, trains Vehicle classes that stay automatic
Config.ExcludedModels Common EVs and utility vehicles Extra models that stay automatic
Config.Gate How the stick moves: sensitivity, padSpeed, snapIn, popOut…
Config.Clutch 0.12 s down, 0.90 s up pressTime, releaseTime, biteStart, biteEnd, shiftMax
Config.Engine Idle, rev limiter, torque curve, power, overRev, stalling (stallTime, judder)
Config.Drive.mode 'ratio' 'ratio' holds the game in one gear with the selected gear's real ratio; 'scale' keeps the game's gears and scales power (fallback)
Config.Rollback On freeCoupling, maxSpeed, resistance
Config.Parked On How an empty car behaves: holdDecel, engineBrake, blockedTime, crashJolt…

Keeping a vehicle automatic

lua
-- Vehicle classes: 13 cycles, 14 boats, 15 helicopters, 16 planes, 21 trains
Config.ExcludedClasses = { [13] = true, [14] = true, [15] = true, [16] = true, [21] = true }

-- Extra models (EVs the game doesn't flag, for example)
Config.ExcludedModels = { 'voltic', 'cyclone', 'raiden', 'neon', 'tezeract', 'imorgon' }

Exports

lua
-- Client: the gearbox's current state (used by Bucky HUD's speedometers)
local state = exports['bucky-driving']:GetGearState()

Works with Bucky HUD

With Bucky HUD running, its speedometers show the gear the player selected in the gate (N, R, 1, 2 …, even while stalled) and the gearbox's own engine RPM instead of the game's automatic gear, and gearbox messages like "Stalled" appear in the HUD's notifications. Without Bucky HUD, nothing breaks: the gate shows the gear itself and messages go through the GTA feed.

Bucky Driving and Bucky HUD are sold together as the Bucky Drive Pack.

Performance

  • Bucky Driving runs entirely on the client.
  • Its driving code only runs while you drive a manual car.
  • The 3D view redraws only when something moves.

Troubleshooting

The gate doesn't appear. The vehicle may be excluded (Config.ExcludedClasses / ExcludedModels), or the player turned manual off. Try /manual.

The mouse turns the camera instead of moving the stick. The stick only moves while the clutch is held. Check the clutch key under Settings → Key Bindings → FiveM.

J doesn't start the car. Starting needs neutral or the clutch pressed, and J only restarts engines Bucky Driving turned off.

The 3D view shows as 2D. The player's game has no WebGL, so the flat view is used.

Shifting feels wrong on a particular car. Try Config.Drive.mode = 'scale' if 'ratio' misbehaves on your build.

Changelog

1.1.0

  • The car stays as you left it. Getting out no longer turns the engine off or resets the gear.
  • Parking. In gear with the engine off, the car is held, even on a hill. Hold Space while getting out to leave the handbrake on.
  • J turns the engine off and on. Starting still needs neutral or the clutch.
  • Jumping out of a moving car: it keeps going in its gear and stalls if the gear is too tall.
  • An empty car stalls when it creeps into a wall, gets hit, or is shoved backwards against its gear.
  • Works across players: if another player's game takes over the empty car, it keeps moving the same way.
  • New settings: Config.Parked.

1.0.0

  • First release: 3D H-pattern gear stick worked with the mouse, clutch with a bite point, per-gear torque, stalling with judder, hill rollback, on-screen pedals, three styles in 3D or 2D, mechanical sounds, /gearhud settings and the Bucky HUD gear link.
